(Engraving of original Boston Tea Party by WD Cooper, from UShistory.org)

Today is our turn in Washington, DC, for a new Tea Party. There are actually two of them: 11 AM to 3 PM in Lafayette Park, across from the White House, at Pennsylvania Avenue and Jackson Plaza, NW., and Noon to 2 PM at the Treasury Department, Pennsylvania and 15th Street, NW.

I'll be at Treasury at 11:59 AM to protest the president's new higher taxes, much, much higher spending and deficits, the new government takeover of the economy, the massive bailout of Detroit and the banks, the proposed bailout of the International Monetary Fund (as of April 13, 2009), et cetera. The U.S. Mint is not just a printing press. Our money is not your money, Mr. President, This is not the "hope and change" some voted for. Our nation is still one of laws and not men (i.e., personalities). No to the cult of personality!

Others have noted the cult of personality around the president. Check out this excerpt from a Democratic supporter (not an opponent!) at the Group News Blog:

Then came the actual Obama event [Key Arena, Puget Sound, WA, Feb. 8, 2008].. The best I can liken it to is a cross between a rock concert and a religious revival. The place was filled, probably over 20,000 people (the Clinton event was only 3,000+ people) and both turned people away. From the moment Obama hit the stage, everyone (but the press) was on their feet and never sat down.

Obama almost never got into specifics. It was change, change, save the country, change, yes we can, change. He did talk about both his health care plan and his education plan, and gave specifics in both cases, briefly. But then it was back to broad strokes. He spent a lot of time defending himself against the lack-of-experience charge.[Emphasis added here -- Ed.]

Then Obama ended with "there is a moment in the the life of every generation where we decide. This is our moment. We will win. Together we will change the world."

Watching Obama reminded me VERY strongly of watching Werner Erhard, the est leader, on stage in front of tens of thousands of people in the 80s (and on videotape of Erhard at the Hollywood Bowl in the 70s.) Obama has precisely the same kind of universal appeal, the same kind of declarative "making a difference" saving the world approach. He's even using many of the same words and the crowd ate it up. [Emphasis in original -- Ed.]

[...]

Because Obama is not saying what he is for, not laying out specifics, and not making genuine promises, but instead
making powerful declarations, making himself the candidate with whom everything changes and NEVER SPECIFYING WHAT IN THE HELL THAT MEANS, people are free to, and they damn well are, projecting onto Obama all their hopes and dreams for a better future. He is their mother, their father, their lover, confessor, their priest, their shining city on a hill. [Emphasis added here -- Ed.]

[...]

The kids supporting Obama at the Seattle event, from the volunteers to the people in the stands, seemed high, as in not in full control of themselves. That they were high with a peak experience is great and good for them, but they still weren't in control. They were filled with this great joy. They bumped into things and laughed.

[...]

I've been around cults, religions, and high-dominance authoritarian institutions much of my life. While I won't go so far as to call the Obama organization a cult, as clearly the volunteers live out in the world and have their lives, people are VERY focused on Obama and don't really know much about what he stands for (and he's not saying.) They are making a demon out of [Hillary] Clinton, and get very twitchy when crossed. The volunteers are putting their hopes and dreams into Obama.

This at the least, approaches a serious cult of personality, and perhaps more. It is easily up to the Werner Erhard / George W. Bush level, and without much trouble, will go further.

Now why did I said in the headline that Homeland Security thinks you are a threat? Michelle Malkin, as well as many others including Jason Hayes ("Obama's DHS Sees Conservatives as the Enemy"), has exposed a real Unclassified/For Official Use Only document from the Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) which is troubling.

The DHS intelligence assessment is entitled Right Wing Extremism: Current Economic and Political Climate Fueling Resurgence in Radicalization and Recruitment, PDF here. It suggests that protests against the President's budget and Congress' takeover of the economy may be a danger to the nation. Huh?

Remember the expression, "Dissent is patriotic"? We heard it from the Left when they protested former President George W. Bush's policies! Also, much of what Tom Paine said reflected just such a healthy skepticism of the government. If you're "anti-government," or hate high taxes, you may be painted as a new enemy of the state. You should not be surprised that your dissent is considered an attack on the government! It's vitally important to hold our leaders accountable, and not just every four years at the ballot box.

See you at the Tea Party, 11:59 AM, at the White House. Bring a polite sign and a good attitude: The Department of Homeland Security will be photographing the event, no doubt.
